Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park consists of four separate areas: the areas around Mt. Fuji, around the Hakone Mountains, along the coastline of Izu Peninsula, and around the Izu Islands. The Fuji and Hakone areas were designated a National Park in 1936 and in 1938, respectively. In 1955 the park was expanded to include the Izu Peninsula, and in 1964 the Izu Islands were added to from the present Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park, covering a total land area of 121,695 ha (300,587 ac), with a marine park zone of 51,6 ha (127 ac). Each of the areas possesses distinct individual features. All lie within the Fuji volcanic chain, and their scenic beauty owes much to past volcanic activities.
