Hiroshima Castle was constructed in 1589 by Mori Terumoto. Classed as a National Treasure in 1931, it was reduced to ashed by the A-bomb. The present building, a faithful replica of the donjon (main keep) of the original castle, was completed in 1958. The tower is a museum with exhibits related to the history of Hiroshima. The main area and an adjacent area were designated a national historic site in 1953. In commemorating of its 400thanniversary in 1989, the gate and battlements in the adjacent area were reconstructed.
